.: AdSense-well: The Singapore success story

With all the hype and enthusiasm surrounding AdSense, it is perhaps laughable that not many in Singapore actually turn to this method to generate a form of revenue for their website. Why is this so? Perhaps the reason can be explained by the fact that Singaporeans are typically cautious of earning any revenue from the internet. This, despite the fact that more than 80% of the country is connected. For all the bandwidth and connection speeds available, the average Singaporean only uses it to surf the web or to blog one or two posts.
I signed up for AdSense in 2003 and by learning the simple tricks and also putting myself in the shoes of the visitor, have managed to earn a decent amount of revenue to supplement my income. The satisfying thing is that many of the visitors to my site actually feel that they have gained something useful. This has really made me wonder what I should do to promote AdSense to fellow Singaporeans.
One thing about AdSense is that you need a site, filled with content. Now many people blog over here, but they feel that its just for them to keep a reference to their life. Little do they know that they are actually sitting on a goldmine! When I started out, not many help was available and I really had to learn all on my own. The good thing was that because of that, I knew what not to do, because I realized what worked and what didn’t.
• Banners – the banner which we have come to recognize and avoid seems to be one of the most popular with the people starting out. That is the biggest mistake that one can make. Think about it, if you will consciously avoid clicking on a banner ad, wouldn’t the rest of the connected world?
• Chameleon – A chameleon always tries to blend itself with its surrounding, to avoid being caught or detection. The same should go for the ad. Blending in with the rest of your site makes sense, because you want people to actually click on your ads. Sticking out like a sore thumb rarely works, no matter what others tell you.
• Content – You hear this mantra all the time, “Content is King”. There is a certain truth in it, Google being Google, appreciates fresh content, and if you would want to actually have some semblance of traffic, it would do you good to add content on a consistent basis. Granted that its almost impossible to get original content out daily, do get hold of some free articles that are published by like-minded writers who like to put their linguistic skills to good use.
• Clicking – Clicking on your own ad is the surest way to get kicked out of the program. Do not even think that Google will hear your explanation, for they don’t. As it is with their closely guarded PageRank algorithm, it also holds true for how they monitor your account. Therefore, do not even attempt to test their system.
Of course, there are still other considerations to take note of in order to succeed and earn a decent revenue. However, those that are listed above do tend to be the basics of AdSense. And like a good building, you need to get the foundations right before you even attempt to build a skyscraper. So I advise you to get the basics in motion first, and then we’ll talk about raking in the cash.
