.: Creating A Flatmate Profile

So you've decided that you want to find a flatmate or flateshare, well the first thing you are going to have to do is create a profile. Your profile is basically your advert to the world of what you are looking for so as you can imagine making it stand out and being informative are two very important factors so we are going to start with the first of them two things your photo's. With digital camera's and seeing as most phones have half decent camera's uploading a picture is easy to do and very help full.

Common Sense

We'll start off with the don'ts it may sound silly, but use your common sense when adding the picture to your flatmate profile. Using a name like BridgetJones then uploading pictures from the film as your profile image is a big no no!!! Your probably thinking that is obvious, but you would be amazed at the amount of profiles I've seen that have someone's idol whether that be a musician, footballer, filmstar etc for there picture's.

The weird pictures on roommate profiles doesn't stop there, the other reoccurring thing people seem to love doing is posting pictures of the pets they own!!!! Bizarre I know, but if you are thinking of doing it don't you are potentially ruining any chance of finding a flatmate to rent your room. It's ok to love your pet and its also a good thing to let people know what animals you own as they may be allergic or just not like them but think about what people looking to rent a room are interested in the room, the flatmate's, location etc so these are the things you should be using to help your flatshare find a flatmate.

The Good!

So you know what you shouldn't do so here's some of the do's (some may sound obvious, but this site is here to help provide the information whether it be obvious or oblivious). To start off is a sensible one and that is to make sure what your taking a picture of is tidy, it could be the front room, bedroom, kitchen etc just make sure it looks clean, tidy and somewhere someone would be happy to share.

Secondly is lighting, make sure you that the area you are taking a picture of is well lit. Bad lighting could make the best looking room in the world look cheap so if you have to bring a few lamps into the room to brighten the place up it will help no end for your flatshare photos.

What Should I snap?

Well to start off with a picture of the room that is being offered to your potential flatmate is the obvious one. So you've got the bedroom out of the way now you really want to sell your flatshare so pick what you feel is the best room in the house/flat and take a picture of that remembering lighting and to be tidy. This is a great help for people browsing through profiles as they are looking for somewhere they would like to be so a nice kitchen, living area, bathroom etc could be the difference between someone looking for a flatshare emailing you or not!

Next is the flatmates you don't have to do this, but it can be of help to have a picture of the person or persons already in the flatshare as it gives your profile more of a personal touch. There are some big don't here and they are again common sense. Pictures of people totally drunk or passed out don't look good nor do one where all the flatmates have posed for the picture like a photo shoot. You want something natural looking looking like relaxing in the garden, having a BBQ or being down the pub (avoid being totally drunk as said above) this helps to convey a sociable flatshare.

Lastly is the extras like location, garden, driveway etc, if your flatshare has something that stands out from the others flaunt it.

Driveways are a big selling point with houses and the same goes for flatshare's so if there is a parking space or two let your potential flatmates know with a picture. Location also is a huge deciding factor so for example if you can see Canary Wharf from your flatshare let people see this. You can add this to your written description, but people see your pictures firsts and this helps make them read the description.
