American Cranberry Viburnums have been cultivated by man for thousands of years and this particular variety is my favorite for fast growing and easy to cultivate plants. If you have had trouble growing other plants in Eastern Pa., this is a plant that will not fail for you. Planting Requirements - American Cranberrybush prefers moist to wet soils of rich or average composition, and of acidic pH. However, it tolerates dry soils of acidic, neutral, or alkaline pH reasonably well. It loves full sun to partial sun, and performs well in partial shade to full shade, although its growth habit will be much more sparce. It habitat range is found in zones 2 to 7.
The mature fruit makes good preserves. It is ripe when it turns red. The leaves seldom pose a raking and cleaning problem. Birds frequent this shrub for feed and shelter in Eastern Pa. Plants are native and tolerate shade but flower and fruit best in full sun. I have never seen a native American Cranberry Viburnum in our county (Bucks County, Pa. ) that seeded naturally. Even so it will still thrive in the soils of Bucks County Pa. and in Eastern Pa.
On our plant durability list, we rate this a 9 for ease of transplanting and site adaptability. There are also few serious pests that homeowners need to concern themselves with in Eastern Pa. We have many deer on our nursery and we have not seen much deer damage to this plant by deer feeding on this plant. You can call us or visit our web site for more information on other Viburnums
