.: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is Something That Takes Time to Learn and Understand
Category:Home / Internet Marketing / Search Engine Optimization
Every day, millions of people around the world use search engines to find information. Naturally, these people want something quick and effective, so the web sites that appear among the top of the search results stand better chance of getting noticed and clicked on.
This is why many business owners invest a fortune on search engine marketing, which covers several methods aimed at maximizing the widespread popularity of the Internet. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a subset of search engine marketing focusing on improving the ranking of a website in search engine listings.
SEO can be categorized "white hat SEO" and "black hat SEO". Generally speaking, "white hat SEO" refers to playing by the rules and "black hat SEO" means dark side techniques such as spamming or cloaking. "White hat SEO" practices can take some time to implement but is better for long-term results. "Black hat SEO" techniques (keyword stuffing, doorway pages, invisible texts, etc.) can provide short-term gains in terms of rankings, but you run the risk of being penalized by search engines.
Some "white hat" practices can actually increase this risk of being penalized, while some can reduce the risk. "Black hat" techniques will always increase the risk that a site will be deliberately removed from a search engine's index. Some "black hat" techniques are severely penalized and are not worth risking your business over.
There are other tactics which fall in the grey area between clean tactics and dark-side search engine spam. They include paid links, duplicate content and so on. These tactics, although not too risky, are not recommended because your competitors can report your site to the engines, even if the search engines cannot detect these tactics.
One important weapon is your keywords. You need to determine which keywords you want your web site to focus on for potential search engine listings. Also, keep in mind that their variants might be useful too (synonyms, misspelled words, plural versions, hyphens, etc.). Once you have chosen the keywords, make the most out of them by placing them in the right places without being too heavy-handed or making them appear unnaturally manipulated. Here are some tips: The title tag, meta title tag and meta description tag of your html should include your target keywords and the meta keywords tag of your html should include all of your keywords.
Other popular strategies include exchanging links, registering with directories and more. However, there is no definite right and wrong in search engine marketing. What works for one site might not work for others. Your best bet will always be writing good contents and making your web site professional looking because even if you rank well and attract millions of web site visitors each day, if your pages do not sell, you will not benefit from them.
It might take a while for your web site to be indexed by the search engine spiders, so it is advisable to manually submit your URL with major search engines or directories. In general, submission does not guarantee listing or help with rank improvement but it is the fastest way to get noticed by search engines.
SEO is something that takes time to learn and understand, and the algorithms change very often. If your business cannot afford to spend that much time and effort, consult SEO firms who offer services in this field. They are, of course, more experienced and up to the trend in the industry, but there are also a few unethical SEO service providers who are overly aggressive in marketing.
