.: What Role Does Page Rank Play In SEO?

Page rank is a topic which is fiercely debated in webmaster forums these days. Some webmasters pay for it, and believe it is important. Others believe that it is a complete waste of time, and does not play an important role in the success of your site. If you believe either of these things, you may be surprised to find that there is truth to both sides of the debate. While Google placed a higher importance on page rank in the past, this is no longer the case today.
At the same time, those who support page rank would say that the most successful sites are those with the highest page rank. It is hard to argue with this fact. Google, Wikipedia, and About.com have page ranks which are between 9 and 10. This websites get millions of visitors a day, and may cost thousands of dollars for you to advertise on them, if they even allowed it. Because of this, page rank does play a factor in the success of a website. Page rank can be defined as a measurement of the importance of a page. On the Google Toolbar the page rank will range from 0 to 10.
Brand new sites will have a page rank of 0, while established websites like Wikipedia may have a page rank of 9. Many webmasters feel that page rank gives them a good idea of how important a site is. In a sense, page rank does play an important part of SEO. It is obvious that websites like Wikipedia are well optimized. However, while page rank is important for search engines, it has little to do with internet marketing. Having a high page rank doesn't guarantee that your site will generate sales. It only says that a particular page on your site is important.
Another problem with page rank is that it can be manipulated. There are a number of sites out there which show a page rank of 7 which are not a PR7. A good way to tell if page rank is accurate is to look at the age of a site. Very few sites have a page rank of 7 or higher which are only a year old. Unless the webmaster spent millions of dollars on the site, it is likely that the page rank is fake. Many webmasters sell text links based on page rank, and this has become a large industry, However, Google frowns on this type of behavior.
