.: Why Are You Paid For Work?

Have you ever wonder why you are paid for your work?

I do because I am a curious by nature. So I put myself in the position of an employer and ask myself, why should I pay someone to do work for me?

Let imagine that I were the owner of a restaurant and I do not know how to cook. It definitely makes sense to hire a few good chefs to cook nice and tasty food. Without them, my business would go bust. In short, I would be leveraging on someone who had the necessary skills.

What if I were to know how to cook averagely? It still makes sense to hire a few good chefs because I need to build a brand of nice and tasty food. If I were to cook myself, I may not be about to convert new customers into regular customers. Also, I may lose regular customers as a result of an averagely cooked food.

To prevent that, it is necessary for me to master the cooking skills. However, there are considerable cost, effort and time on my part to achieve good cooking standard. Thus, it is more cost effective for me to pay someone to do the work. In this way, I will save cost, effort and time by leveraging on him. In other words, I would be leveraging on someone who had better skills.

The next reason that I can think of is that I do not have the time to do it even though I can do it well. Even if I could cook well, there is still a limit to the amount of good food that I could cook per day. This implied that I could only serve a limited number of customers per day. If I want to have more business, I would need to hire more chefs to cope. That is I would be leveraging on others' time and effort.

If for every chef hired at 3K, I were able to make an extra 10K by concentrating on other aspects of the business, then it would make sense for me not to cook even if I could afford to do so. My time would be better spent on improving on the business so that I could earn more money. In summary, I would be leveraging on others so that I can do more important things with my time

In conclusion, I feel that as long as someone can create more value to me by outsourcing. I will consider doing so.

The idea that I will like to share with you:
Leverage on others by outsourcing where appropriate.
