1). Music And Your Child’s Development
As the mother of a two year old, I am always looking for activities that encourage learning and development. I find that most of the activities we do together that result in learning are purely by coincidence and luck – not by any skill or training I have.
As of late, my son has shown a real passion for music. He has even begun to differentiate between styles of music he likes and dislikes – his preferences are Contemporary Christian and Country, of course those both fall behind any song done by The Wiggles.

2). Conflict Resolution for Pre-Schoolers
When I began teaching straight out of college, I had much experience with children, but my degree was in political science. People used to ask me how my BA was useful in teaching nursery school, to which I often replied, “I do a lot of conflict resolution.” Since then I’ve received my Masters degree in Education, and my Political Science degree has been relegated to education for education’s sake, but conflict resolution remains a huge chunk of my professional life.

3). Oh, you’re good for nothing
I don’t believe in good for nothing.
I was walking down the aisle of a large supermarket when I heard a mother hissing to her crying child, “Good for nothing! Nothing! You better stop this now or I will leave you with the police man”. Not that I am angel when it comes to being a parent to my kids. Sometimes, I falter too and I will yell and shout and throw a massive, scary temper and my kids would cower in fright thinking that their mom was going crazy.

There is much to be said about how much television is too much television for children. As parents we are constantly reminded that our children should not be watching television at all. We hear about the risks of Attention Deficit Disorder, overall disobedience, and many other terrible consequences. I don’t disagree completely, but I do believe this topic needs to be discussed in greater detail.

7). What happened to Playtime?
A disturbing trend in our modern society is the way we, as parents, turn our children’s’ days into regimented routines of organized, adult-led extracurricular activities like volleyball practice, gymnastics class, tee-ball games, and dance recitals along with other time consuming functions and commitments. We do all of this at the expense of free play, discovery and exploration, relaxing downtime, and far too-often, family meals.
