1). How is the Weekly Spot Uranium Price Calculated?
Trading in the uranium market is done by a very small number of players. After all, there are about 440 nuclear reactors worldwide, a few dozen trading firms, fuel managers, and a relatively small number of utilities who participate in the actual buying of uranium. It’s the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle. Without it, nuclear reactors shut down.

2). Reversing Mother Nature, Part One
We talked to North America’s leading In Situ Leach (ISL) uranium mining engineers, and had them explain exactly how ISL worked. Most of the significant ISL operations in the United States were designed and/or constructed by these engineers. They explained how ISL mining is really just reversing the process of Mother Nature.
“Blossom” is what underground uranium miners called the crystals forming on the tunnel walls.

3). How Did ISL Uranium Mining Begin?
It’s time to rewrite the history books. In Situ Leach Mining (ISL), or Solution Mining, was not first commercially started in Bruni, Texas in 1973 by Westinghouse, a consortium of oil companies and others. The birthplace of ISL was never South Texas, as some have claimed. It was begun in Wyoming, about 16 years before an ISL operation was started in Texas.

4). Safest Ways to Invest in Uranium Companies
In Situ Leach (ISL) mining of uranium has been growing in popularity. About 21 percent of the world’s nuclear reactors are now fueled by uranium mined using this method. The three top areas for ISL mining are the United States, Australia and Kazakhstan. How do you evaluate the many uranium companies now developing their ISL operations?

5). Investment Manager Warns about Investing in Uranium Projects
Although the junior mining sector began crumbling in May, savvy investor Mike Halvorson, president of Halcorp Capital, still ended up having a very busy summer. Welcome to the world of a substantial investor in mining stocks, who gets in early and then enjoys sizeable profits as, one by one, his companies become takeover targets. “I’ve been fortunate,” the humble Halvorson told us, “I’ve gotten associated with top explorationists, the people who do know a quality project.

6). How to Evaluate an ISL Uranium Company
Over the past two years, the common myth circulated among investors has been “pounds in the ground.” How many pounds of U3O8 does a company have in the ground? The more pounds a company claims, and more importantly gets institutions and investors to believe, the higher its market capitalization has run. Bigger is always better in most cases, but recovering uranium through an ISL operation, like any other mining operation, has its quirks.

7). New Mexico: Who Are The Serious Players?
Several uranium development companies have set their sights on New Mexico. Two are actively involved in permitting their properties for production. One was the first to be issued a drilling permit in about a decade; another awaits a permit in order to drill the company’s property. Another is an 800-pound gorilla in the nuclear fuel cycle. Three others have properties or continue to assemble a land package in New Mexico.

8). U.S. Uranium Industry to Produce 20 Million Pounds by 2012
The Uranium Producers of America (UPA) was formed more than twenty years ago. Over the years, this trade association worked with Congress and state legislators to help improve the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle: uranium mining. Today, it has been re-energized with new members and with the task of helping to rebuild the U.S. uranium mining sector.

ISL EXTRACTION AND PROCESSING
During ISL mining, water is pumped to the surface from production wells that contain uranium in very low concentrations, on the order of parts per million concentrations.

12). New Mexico Town Prepares to Embrace Returning Uranium Miners
Once the proud center of the Uranium Universe, and until recently the world’s largest uranium producer, the city of Grants (New Mexico) nearly collapsed in the 1980s as uranium prices sank into a twenty-year depression. Five thousand uranium miners lost their jobs, and the city elders panicked, searching for an industry with which to replace mining.

Guess what? Our recent investigation shows the uranium to be enriched in the LES/Urenco proposed enrichment facility in Lea County, New Mexico may come neither from uranium properties in New Mexico nor anywhere else in the United States. Just as New Mexico’s nuclear/uranium mining renaissance was ready to get underway, a deal may have already been cut to enrich uranium mined in a foreign country.
